Yankees complete organizational meetings

2005/11/4
Their first order of business all but complete, George Steinbrenner and his Tampa contingent of officials flew home Wednesday after two days of organizational meetings.
The Yankees have settled on their overhauled coaching staff, and only a few minor contract issues need to be finished before they can make all the additions official.
The team did introduce Lee Mazzilli Wednesday as its fourth bench coach in as many years, one day after presenting Larry Bowa as its new third-base coach.
The Yankees also will hire Ron Guidry as pitching coach, Tony Pena as first-base coach and Joe Kerrigan as bullpen coach, and it all could be announced today.
General Manager Brian Cashman said manager Joe Torre immediately thought of Mazzilli, who was first-base coach from 2000-03, when Joe Girardi left to manage the Florida Marlins.
"It just seemed like a natural fit," Cashman said.
Saying "it's good to be home again," Mazzilli believes he is better for his 1?years managing the Orioles, and the Yankees hope so, too. They put lots of stock in managing experience, filling four of five open slots with former managers.
Mazzilli, who went 129-140 with the Orioles before getting fired in July, wants to use his Baltimore ties to the Yankees' advantage, offering to call free-agent B.J. Ryan.
The Yankees may be better off using Guidry in that capacity. Guidry and Ryan are two of only a handful of players to make it to the big leagues out of the University of Louisiana-Lafayette, and Ryan is said to hold Guidry in high regard.
Cashman Wednesday also spoke with former third-base coach Luis Sojo, who said in a telephone interview that he will likely manage Class-A Tampa next season. "I want to spend time with my family," he said, "and I'll be doing something I want to do." Sojo said last week he wanted an explanation from Cashman why he was losing his job, but he said Wednesday he didn't get one, and wasn't as bothered by it anymore.
"That's OK," he said. "As a coach, you've got to understand, that's New York. They believe you didn't get the job done, and it's time to move on. I want to do that."
The Yankees also agreed to give the Reds permission to speak with Triple-A Columbus manager Bucky Dent -- more than three weeks after it was requested. Dent expects to get a deal done within a day or two to become their bench coach.
With the coaching staff complete, the Yankees move on to locking up Hideki Matsui. The Yankees would like to get it done soon, although the Nov. 15 deadline could be pushed back if both parties agree.
