New York, NY (Sports Network) - Baltimore Orioles outfielder B.J. Surhoff was among five players filing for free agency on Thursday.
Surhoff hit .257 with five homers and 34 RBI in 91 games for the Orioles last season. He battled through two stints on the disabled list in 2005, his third consecutive season with Baltimore. New York Yankees lefthander Alan Embree and Los Angeles Dodgers righthander Elmer Dessens also filed for free agency. Second baseman Roberto Alomar and outfielder Danny Bautista, who both retired on the same day in spring training, also became free agents. Alomar leaves the game as a career .300 hitter with 210 homers, 1,134 RBI and 474 stolen bases over 17 seasons with San Diego, Toronto, Baltimore, Cleveland, Arizona, the Chicago White Sox and the New York Mets. He was a 10-time Gold Glove Award winner and was an All-Star 12 times, including 11 straight years from 1991-2001. Embree was 2-5 with a 7.62 ERA in 67 games combined with the Yankees and Red Sox last season, while Dessens was 1-2 with a 3.56 ERA in 28 contests -- seven starts -- for the Dodgers.
